Eureka, Gopher Tortoise

I have really learned to like and respect Gopher Tortoises! They are part of a lineage that goes back nearly 60 million years, they are one of the oldest living species on this planet! They are builders and their burrows provide homes and safety for over 350 other species, yes Over 350, wow! And most importantly they are a Keystone species basically due to those wonderful burrows they call home, some of which can be almost 45 feet long. Without these burrows many of the 350 plus critters would be hard pressed to find safety, shelter, food as well as a place to breed and raise young. This large female Gopher Tortoise is stepping out onto her sun lit apron while being overwatched by a pair of scrub jays!
